Noche de Velitas, Gaitas y Verbenas
Noche de Velitas—or Night of the Little Candles—is one of the most beloved holiday traditions in many Hispanic countries, particularly in Colombia. Celebrated each year on December 7th, this event marks the beginning of the Christmas season and is known for its warm, joyful ambiance created by the soft glow of candles (velitas), which symbolize hope, unity, and the light of the Virgin Mary.
Gaitas, on the other hand, are a vibrant folk music style from Venezuela, traditionally played during the holiday season. Their lively rhythms bring people together to sing, dance, and celebrate community spirit. Verbenas are festive community gatherings filled with food, music, and cultural expressions.
Americas Community Center began hosting Noche de Velitas, Gaitas y Verbenas in Weston, Florida, to celebrate and preserve these cherished Hispanic holiday traditions. The event creates a space where families can pass down their culture to younger generations, and where those unfamiliar with these customs can come to learn, appreciate, and enjoy them.
This free community festival is held each year at Weston Regional Park Bandshell on the Saturday closest to December 7th. The evening comes to life with a main stage full of live music, traditional dances, and special guests. All around the bandshell, you’ll find a variety of local vendors offering traditional foods, information about local businesses and services, and a bazaar of handcrafted and showable items—with new offerings every year.
More than a celebration, Noche de Velitas, Gaitas y Verbenas is a cultural experience that unites neighbors, honors traditions, and reflects the beautiful diversity of our community.
